Overview

The City That Builds the Impossible

Dubai turned a strip of desert coastline into one of the world’s most-visited cities in about three decades, and it shows no sign of slowing down. The world’s tallest building, an indoor ski slope, man-made islands shaped like palm trees — Dubai treats “world’s biggest” as a to-do list, and tourists come from everywhere to see it in person.

But beneath the record-breaking towers is a genuinely walkable, well-run city with excellent public transport, a growing food scene, and easy access to desert adventures just outside town. This guide covers the mix of splurge and smart-spend that makes a Dubai trip work on almost any budget.

Timing

When to Visit

November through March is peak season — daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 70s–80s°F (20s°C), perfect for outdoor attractions, desert safaris, and beach time. Expect higher hotel prices and busier attractions.

April–May and October are solid shoulder-season options with fewer crowds. June–September brings extreme heat (often 105°F+/40°C+), but also the lowest hotel rates of the year and heavily air-conditioned malls, aquariums, and indoor attractions to hide from it.

Planning

Getting There & Entry Requirements

Nearly all international flights arrive at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest airports in the world and the hub for Emirates. The Dubai Metro connects directly to the airport, reaching Downtown Dubai in about 30–40 minutes.

As of 2026, citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and many other countries receive a free visa on arrival valid for 30–90 days depending on nationality. A passport valid for at least 6 months is required, and it’s worth checking your specific country’s allowance before booking, since rules vary.

Dubai levies a small nightly Tourism Dirham fee (roughly AED 7–20/night depending on hotel category), collected directly by the hotel at check-in.

  • Dubai Marina — A glittering waterfront strip of towers, restaurants, and yacht life along a man-made canal.

  • Old Dubai (Deira & Bur Dubai) — Gold and spice souks, abra boat crossings, and the city’s pre-boom history.

  • Al Quoz — Dubai’s arts district, with warehouse galleries and increasingly hip cafés.
